Highlands, North Carolina was founded in 1875 by Samuel Truman Kelsey and Clinton Carter Hutchinson. Kelsey and Hutchinson drew lines from Chicago to Savannah and from New Orleans to New York City believing that they felt the location where these lines met would eventually become a great trading center and commercial crossroads.
 
In 1928 when golf legend Bobby Jones hit the first ball from Highlands Country Club, the newly designed Donald Ross course, that was the beginning of Highlands, North Carolina becoming a destination for golf enthusiasts. Today, there are more than 15 golf courses within the Plateau. Located in close proximity to major metropolitan areas, the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau offers the perfect location nestled within the Blue Ridge Mountains for golfing, hiking, or relaxation. With an elevation of 4,118 feet in Highlands and an elevation of 3,484 feet in Cashiers, the summer temperatures are mild offering the perfect climate for a multitude of outdoor activities.
